Public Debates
Our next public debate will be on the 10th of may 2012, entitled “Plain Packaging: Sensible Health Policy or Nanny State Nonsense?” A debate on tobacco control issues, specifically the motion to remove advertising from cigarette packaging.
Arguing for plain packaging, Stephen Williams MP and Dr Gabriel Scally, former Regional Director of Public Health for the South West.
Arguing against it, Simon Clark and Chris Snowdon.
Simon is the director of the smokers’ lobby group Forest and The Free Society.
Chris is a historian, blogger and author of a recent booklet on plain packaging (published by the Adam Smith Institute)
It promises to be an interesting debate with some great speakers.
Refreshments served before the debate.
Previous public debates run by the BDU include This House Would Ban Abortion, led by speakers from Marie Stopes International and the ProLife Alliance, held in the Wills Hall Chapel.
Last year, in the week leading up to the Alternative Vote referendum, the BDU ran its first joint venture with the University of Bristol Students Union, UBU titled the Great AV Debate. Guest speakers included Tony Robinson, Paul Smith, Don Collier and Dom Moffitt. The debate can be seen on YouTube, and is embedded below:
